“I want mobile to be seen as the beginning for transactions and not a secondary thought. Consumers are ready!
”
It gives me great pleasure to kick off the MOBILE10 this week with a very smart mobile guy, Carl Uminski, co-founder of Somo and also, like myself, a big Watford FC fan!

What’s your app of the moment?

I’m going to be really boring and say Google Maps. It’s the only application that has so much functionality that I use it on a daily basis. It’s loaded with information about where I need to go – addresses, telephone numbers, opening times, reviews, the full traffic details, bus times, tube map and the ability to see my destination before I get there – all for free! Next?

What is your primary phone?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus – I only upgraded last week, quite neutral about it right now it. Was previously Nexus S, then the Nexus One and before that the HTC Magic. I tend to stick to Android as it works so well with Google’s corporate app suite, which makes my life easier at work. I use iOS for leisure.

Which mobile startups have you got your eye on?

Touchtype (@swiftkey) is without doubt the best keyboard for the Android platform, a market-leading predictive text keyboard that uses AI to adapt to your personal writing time and saves a ton of time per week. If you’ve not got it on Android, how do you type?

What are you currently working on?

Since the launch of Somo in 2009, we’ve become the largest independent mobile marketing agency in Europe. I’m spending most of my time now making sure we become the world’s largest. I’m currently launching four new business units on top of the four we launched this year.

What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

It has to be and I really hope it’s true – mcommerce. Let’s see retail properly take off mainstream, let’s see NFC, but most importantly, I want mobile to be seen as the beginning for transactions and not a secondary thought. Consumers are ready!

Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

Andy Rubin, the founder of Android, which has become a serious competitor in the OS ecosystem in such a short space of time. He sold to Google at the right time and has done a fantastic job to bring this platform to life within a large corporation. And given RIM and Symbian a kick!
My second is Jeff Bezos, or possibly just Amazon for a number of reasons. Firstly, they’ve nailed transactions on mobile. The product set, delivery times and the simplicity get you to spend vast amounts of money on a small screen, and that’s fantastic. I use it wherever I am. Secondly, the launch of the Amazon app store has been a success and the only real on-device contender to the native Android store – a good start. With the dominance of the Kindle for books and now the launch of the Fire, disruption is obviously top of their list, which I love to see!
My last, but not least, has to be David Ko, SVP Mobile at Zynga. David rose through the Yahoo! US bureaucracy to single-handily run the Asia Pacific region for Yahoo! Mobile, resulting in Yahoo! becoming the dominate player in Indonesia and neighbouring markets. He is now back in the US rocking at Zynga games. David spots opportunities others walk past to bring success.
Who were you working for 10 years ago?

I was the CTO of Overture Europe, (formerly known as GoTo.com), which since its acquisition is Yahoo! Search Marketing. About 8 years ago though, I did launch the first mobile search engine on Orange with sponsored search listings… boy it’s changed since then.

Who was/is your best boss?

You can check in and check out of the ‘Hynes Hotel’, but you never really leave. It’s got to be Nick Hynes, my current business partner and I guess we like to call him boss. More importantly when I was a wee lad 10 years ago, he was also the good ol’boss or ‘El Presidente’ as we like to call him

Who else should we interview?

Mihir Shah – GM Mobile at Groupon Inc. Mihir is a digital legend, founded a mobile development company at the time every valley company needed a dev shop. A little company called Groupon acquired his business, Mob.ly, and I guess the rest is history. I will let him tell you about it.
