10 years ago I arrived in Japan to set-up shop with my new wife.. it’s been a fantastic ride.

  1. What's your app of the moment?

  2. While this may sound glib.. my ‘primary’ app is the browser! A favorite tag-line in my current prezzi is: If you Like the App Store.. you’re gonna Love the Internet™

  3. What is your primary phone?

  4. Naturally, I have several devices – including an N8 for roaming. My ‘personal’ handset, due for retirement, is the 932SH by Sharp. They just announced 104SH with a 1.5 GHz dual-core, looks pretty slick. Watching now for what else we’ll see, expect more Win7+ devices here in the near future as well.

  5. Which mobile startups have you got your eye on?

  6. Whew.. that would be a long list! As we track both domestic and overseas activity, really not sure where to begin – and – hate to leave aside deserving players when naming names. I would say some of the most interesting things we see come from the least likely places and the most significant opportunities are mashing multiple vertical segments into a clear offering that addresses an obvious pleasure or pain point. Challenge for all, as always, is the target, timing and ability to be slightly ahead of the curve while keeping their heads above water.

  7. What are you currently working on?

  8. Mobikyo runs three lines of business; we publish Wireless Watch Japan, since 2001, and organize Mobile Monday Tokyo since 2004. Media and Events typically lead to research and advisory services, which come under our so-called Mobile Intelligence section with a short-list of key clients that we spin cycles for on a retainer basis. Otherwise, I have been increasingly involved with the Mobile Monday global community over the last few years, especially with the new online platform project.

  9. What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

  10. Space! hehe.. Actually, it’s really a loaded question with so many touch points to consider. Clearly we see plenty of activity in the IP area, the internal component market is Huge, and everyone is focused on how they can best ride on top of the existing platforms going forward with better access to API’s and user data, be that location or preference or social network connections. If forced to choose a few specific areas that I personally think will be interesting then, for example; what degree of impact will the Nokia/MS deal have on market share, based on playing with the N9 and hands-on time with Mango, feel it will be bigger than most think. NFC has long been a very well-established category here in Japan, so how does that shift play-out in global markets. I’m bullish on the obvious trend towards more physical world interaction via digital devices, the new Disney AppMATes is one, of many, examples that I think we will begin to see becoming more common.

  11. Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

  12. Whew.. another tough call. But, since I weaseled out on the 'startups' question above, how about we go with a few folks who are doing really amazing work on behalf of the mobile industry as a whole? Mario Tapia and the MoMo crew in Silicon Valley have been kicking, as has Caroline Lewko and Co. at WIP based out of Vancouver. Helen Keegan has been an inspiration running Mobile Monday events in London and Marc Fonteijn with the Amsterdam team has clearly set the benchmark with MoMo gigs there. So, that's three great examples and I have not even touched APAC, Africa or Middle East.. which has another several Billion more people to consider!

  13. Who were you working for 10 years ago?

  14. 10 years ago I arrived in Japan to set-up shop with my new wife.. it’s been a fantastic ride.

  15. Who was/is your best boss?

  16. As a lifetime entrepreneur.. my best ‘boss’ is always – the customer – more like a partner!

  17. Who should we interview next?

  18. Since I left out this side of the world on the #7 ‘rockstars’ question – and you already have Tomi based in Hong Kong – so how about:

Jessica Colaco at iHub in Nairobi

    Andy Zain at MoMo Jakarta

    Ben Bickford at MoMo Melbourne
