my team officially call me “the noisiest person at SPB”

It is a great pleasure to interview my good friend, fellow mlover and all round great character, Olga Steidl of SPB fame. We hosted the Mobile Valentine’s Party at MWC earlier this year. Cinco cinco cinco.

  1. What’s your app of the moment?

  2. Definitely Instagram and “Read it Later“. One of my twitter followers called the last one “read it never”, but I actually enjoy collecting and reading good articles while traveling.

With Instagram there is another story. I feel that Facebook is more and more substituting LinkedIn and Twitter for me, but sharing someones life in picture is quite complicated there. Also Instagram’s community is just a very creative tribe and I get inspiration everyday.

  3. What is your primary phone?

  4. I actually have 3 of them. One iPhone 4 in white (yes, I’m that girly), one Android HTC phone for all brilliant apps and UI extensions and one old school non-touch Symbian, which is perfect for texting, mailing and calling.

I use them all everyday and can’t really tell which one I like more, it’s just about use cases and usability issues.

  5. Which mobile startups have you got your eye on?

  6. That’s actually a sad question. I was at Startup Week Europe 2011 last week and didn’t meet that many mobile startups though. The startup community is still a desktop community.

Despite that I adore couple of newcomers, such as MySugr, Wheely team and FellowUp.

  7. What are you currently working on?

  8. With SPB’s new Branded Device UI concept we started this year to work with brands and content owners to create their own devices, with help of which brands can come directly to consumers. Also SPB implemented a couple of new User Interface projects for tablets and smartphones with customers such as Huawei, ViewSonic, MTS, Fly etc.

  9. What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

  10. Cheap devices such as android phones and tablets will be the biggest opportunity for our market next year. Growing the customer base by producing affordable hardware will definitely create a new market or extend existing markets for content owners, mobile developers and mobile operators.

  11. Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

  12. Peter Hale from GregoryBonnerHale design studio for his inspiring UI for Puma Phone and just for his energy to explore new areas of design.

Patrick Bosteels and his team, who work on NFC projects in Europe. I bet they will make us all use NFC everywhere in Europe.

Aape Pojarvirta with his mobile education project in Mexico. I adore how Aape manages to live his dream, be honest and educate kids around the world with the Ympyra team and simple Nokia devices.

  13. Who were you working for 10 years ago?

  14. 10 years ago I was teaching professors and Phd students how to type their dissertations on computers, later I installed ERP systems. I can’t imagine going back from a dynamic mobile market!

  15. Who was/is your best boss?

  16. Every boss is my best boss and actually still my friends. Our users are also my boss. I’m my own boss when I need to wake up at 7am after working till 2am. Though the only person I accept “I told you so” attitude from is SPB CEO Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, who has been my mentor for last 5 years.

  17. Who else should we interview?

  18. Amish Patel, this guy did Windows 8! Come on, he must answer at least question #5.

Matthaus Krzhykowski, from Xylogic, the wikileaks of mobile market. I’m still reading their reports.

Morten Lund, I heard his inspiring speech on startup economy last week. His marvelous experience and vision inspired me.
