“Web apps on mobile will of course be front and centre again
”

What’s your app of the moment?

(sifts through 300 apps he has installed on his phone) I would say the ones I use most are Tweetdeck, Runkeeper, Guardian Anywhere, DI Radio, ESPN Goals, Evernote and Kindle. Not very exciting but what they do they do very well!

What is your primary phone?

It’s a HTC Incredible S at the moment. It’s a good phone and the hardware is decent. Bit buggy in places and the battery life could be better but overall very happy with it. I tend to keep my phones for a short period of time as I can get bored very quickly so when that time comes I’ll either put a custom ROM on it or get something new (if my wife lets me spend money!)

Which mobile start-ups have you got your eye on?

Interestingly enough we’ve just recently finished this year’s Vodafone Mobile Clicks competition where we had 7 different startups in the finals from 7 markets (UK, IE, PT, ES, DE, NL and TU). They were all fantastic entrants and I saw lots of other companies in the preliminary rounds but the ones that I personally really liked were Hole19Golf from Portugal (golf optimisation service and app) and Frogtek (accounting tools for tiny shops in emerging markets) who won this years’ top prize of €150,000.

What are you currently working on?

Lots of things! We’re working on improving the developer portal from an infrastructure and content perspective (making it easier for developers to submit their app to the Vodafone Shop), we’re also coming to the end of the submission period of the Vodafone Smart Accessibility awards which is a competition to find the best apps designed to improve the lives of those with disabilities and people that are older, to help them get more actively involved in society.

What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

The mobile space has always had a HUGE number of opportunities in my opinion, the difference now is that so much of it is accessible to so many people across the value chain. For 2012 I would hope we can really see some interesting uses of open data as people work out exactly what to do with it all. I also see NFC and M2M technologies becoming more prevalent. I think we’ll be seeing some interesting solutions in both these areas. Web apps on mobile will of course be front and centre again too (don’t ask me the native vs web app question please, it’s been answered the same way by many people many times before)

Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

I’m a big believer in teams rather than individuals so I guess that means I can point to some start-ups I’ve come across. I’m excited by the stuff the Wunderlist team (3rd place in Mobile Clicks btw) are doing. I like the potential around Alien Dalvik 2.0 from the Myriad Group too – it’s pretty new but I’m keen to see how it progresses.

Who were you working for 10 years ago?

Crikey, that’s a long time ago! I was working at Symbian as a tools engineer. I’d joined when Symbian were still in start-up mode so it was chaotic but great fun working with some passionate people who were keen to deliver the first smartphones into the market. Remember the R380 from Ericsson? Exciting stuff back then!

Who was/is your best boss?

My current boss Hemant Madan of course! I’ve been fortunate to have worked for some great managers in the past though – Geoff Preston when I was at Symbian stands out.

Who should we interview next?

My mate Phil Northam at Samsung. I worked with him to help create the Samsung developer program. He’s an alright bloke but don’t tell him I told you that.
