“The European Championships and Olympics should give Consumers and Brands an amazing opportunity to harness the power of mobile
”
We ran an event back in 2010 looking at how the World Cup in South Africa would provide a major boost to the growing mobile web and app economy. The Guardian's Steve Wing expects similar major global events such as the Olympics, Euro2012 and the US elections to showcase the endless possibilities that mobile offers brands and consumers and he also has a close eye on SoLoMo and Augmented Reality.

What's your app of the moment?

Flipboard iPhone app. Loving the one-thumb-flip-thingy.
Soundcloud for bringing me so much fine new music.
GTA 3 for reminding me how easy it is to lose time in Liberty City

What is your primary phone?

BB for work. iPhone for play. Mostly.

Which mobile startups have you got your eye on?

Eagle Eye Solutions: some real grown ups with grown up technology and ideas.
Having been previously ‘unimpressed’ I’m now much more interested in where Augmented Reality is heading, so companies like Blippar and Aurasma.
n0tice.com A community noticeboard that is interesting for lots of reasons, not least it’s SoLoMo credentials.

What are you currently working on?

The Guardian’s 2012/13 Mobile/Tablet Roadmap - exciting stuff.

What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

Events like the European Championships, the Olympics and the US presidential election should give Consumers and Brands an amazing opportunity to experience/harness the power of mobile to deliver rich, relevant, and timely content and services.
The connected home will become much more than some TV apps, and therefore much more interesting (see things like: bergcloud.com/littleprinter/). Expect mobile to be the central hub...
Speech, Mobile payments and Marketing Services will all figure....

Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

My 3 today go to the Mobile evangelists that have made a difference in their industries:
Dennis Crowley - Co-Founder Foursquare.Matt Brittin - UK MD Google
Scott Seaborn, Head Of Mobile Technologies, Ogilvy Group UK

Who were you working for 10 years ago?

Guardian Unlimited, the Guardian’s fledgling digital arm

Who was/is your best boss?

I’ve been really lucky to have had a number of fantastic bosses over the years, but Justin Walters when he was Head of New Media for Guardian Unlimited just shades it. More good ideas and good humour than one person should reasonably have. Now CEO at Investis.

Who should we interview next?

Simon Andrews of Addictive Mobile
