What's your app of the moment?

I think the app of the moment is clearly Angry Birds.

What is your primary phone?

I go everywhere with 2 phones, but would count my Samsung Galaxy Beam as my primary phone (this is the one with the pico projector) and my Nokia E7 as my secondary phone, the reason to select that model was the QWERTY keyboard.

Which mobile startups have you got your eye on?

Sorry but I really don’t pay attention to startups, unless totally by accident that I happen to know a founder for example. I am always truly fascinated when someone like say Rudy de Waele talks as his presentations tend to be full of start-ups (and I think to myself, why didn’t I think of that haha). As I look for the revenues and profits in this industry, I am always paying much more attention to companies that have ‘established themselves’ already, like say a Layar.

What are you currently working on?

I always have a book in the works and my consulting brings me to my clients on all six inhabited continents. But my interests at this point tend to focus on two areas – the smartphones ‘bloodbath’ as I call it on my blog, gosh, we get astonishing news in smartphones almost every day. The other rapidly evolving area is mobile money and mobile payments and related matters. Those are on my active radar currently and I dig through all kinds of writing, numbers and analysis relating to those topics (and often then am invited to speak about them at my clients).

What will be the biggest opportunity in 2012?

I think the mobile payments and mobile money opportunity and evolution and innovation of today will mature a lot and by 2012 we should have many strong mobile wallet and mobile consierge services in the style of the first out of Japan on NTT DoCoMo’s network today. If a money services provider (bank, credit card, or any mobile industry player from operator/carrier to handsets maker to operating system provider) develops the mobile wallet and consierge to be seen by the consumer as the best most intelligent service they have ever tried, where the mobile phone acts as if it truly anticipates our needs, kind of ‘reads our minds’ – then we strike gold. That is rather close to the user experiences reported out of Japan by the way.

Who are your 3 rockstars in mobile?

Gosh, only 3? If I could spend a day to just learn more about mobile, I’d say in no particular order today Dan Applequist of Vodafone, Lars Cosh-Ishii of Wireless Watch Japan and MoMo Tokyo, and the inimitable JMac Jonathan MacDonald the author guru mAd guy. (And now I have offended several dozen of my close friends haha).

Who were you working for 10 years ago?

Ten years ago this day? I was on my third-to-last day still employed at Nokia’s HQ running my 3G Consulting Department. Wow. That was 10 years ago. I think I have to go author a nice 10 year anniversary article at my blog at Communities Dominate blog, haha.

Who was/is your best boss?

Ilkka Pukkila my last boss at Nokia and last boss of my career before I went independent. I had a couple of great bosses from whom I learned very much, and several mediocre bosses (and a few horrible ones too). But Ilkka was the sharpest, most insightful and very caring boss who helped me very much in my few years at the political mess which is the headquarters of any Global Fortune 500 sized corporation. And since I left, time and again, I have found that some of the wisdoms Ilkka would share with his subordinates and occasionally also with my whole department, have come back to prove to be true, so I find that I often rely on wisdoms that Ilkka Pukkila first communicated to me. I don’t mean to suggest he would have thought of those matters first – he is a very widely read executive – but for me, I learned those things – often mobile and tech industry related matters – from Ilkka. I am sure most of his current subordinates over there now at NokiaSiemens Networks would still say the same, he is something quite special.

Who should we interview next?

(apart from my rock stars haha) – Christian Lindholm of Fjord. Ajit Jaokar of Futuretext. Paul Golding the author. Kei Shimada of Infinita. Rory Sutherland of Ogilvy. Antti Ohrling of Blyk.
